Massimo Cellino is adored by Leeds United fans, the club's sporting director Nicola Salerno claims.

The Italian businessman took control of Leeds earlier this year and has already worked his way through three managers so far as he looks to set the Whites back on the path to the Premier League.

Cellino, Leeds' president, has been involved in constant wrangling with the Football League and has been asked to stand aside until April due to a conviction for avoiding tax on a boat in his native Italy.

For Salerno, despite Cellino being a controversial figure, he is loved by the Leeds fans, pointing to attendances at Elland Road as proof.

"The tabloids have written a lot, but the Leeds United fans love Cellino", he told Sky Italia.

"The president is very well liked. At home we always have 29,000, 30,000 fans.

"It's obvious that we are missing Italy, but we are getting used to the lifestyle."

Salerno also claimed the Football League transfer embargo Leeds have been placed under for January has little to do with Cellino.

"It is something independent of the president and concerns things that happened last year", Salerno said.

"Cellino has now integrated well enough and here in England there are strict rules that must be respected."
