Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge will spend Christmas with Boston Red Sox medical specialists in a bid to make a speedy return from the injury that has seen him miss the majority of the current season.

The 25-year-old striker scored 21 league goals in the last Premier League campaign, which saw Liverpool miss the title by just two points.

But a spate of injuries saw him make only three appearances in the league this season and the Reds have struggled to maintain last season’s form in his absence and are lying mid-table.

Liverpool owner John Henry also owns the Major League Baseball team Boston Red Sox, where Sturridge will head to in order to work on his thigh injury, according to the BBC.

The striker will be accompanied by Liverpool's head of conditioning Glen Driscoll for this second phase of his recovery process.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said that the club are trying their best in order to "get Sturridge on the pitch consistently".

The Merseysiders play Bournemouth in the League Cup tonight where a win would see them progress to the semi-final.
