Tottenham Hotspur custodian Hugo Lloris insists that winning the League Cup or a European competition is important in its own right for the club, regardless of the Premier League.

The Lilywhites will take on Newcastle United in the quarter-final of the League Cup tonight with the chance of playing in the final at Wembley looming large.

And Lloris, who played his 100th match for Tottenham against Swansea, believes that winning the trophy would be big for the team.

“Of course the league is really important, but to win a trophy like the League Cup or in European competition is always a pleasure", Lloris told his club's official site.

“It’s important for the club, the fans and all the players because you work every day to get the chance to win a trophy."

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino on his part though insists that the road to Wembley will be tough, with tonight's opponents Newcastle sure to pose tough opposition in front of his team.

"It’s a very important game for the club.

“It’s an opportunity to go the semi-final of the Capital One Cup and to do that would be great for the club.

"But we need a very good performance because we have a tough game against Newcastle, a team we respect."
