Manchester United winger Angel di Maria has been voted Argentina’s foreign-based Player of the Year by the country’s sports journalists.

Di Maria pipped compatriot Lionel Messi to the accolade and won the Olimpia de Plata at a ceremony earlier this week.

The winger played a crucial role in former club Real Madrid’s Champions League triumph last season and also starred for Argentina in the World Cup before picking up an injury in the quarter-final that kept him out of the semi-final and the final.

He joined Manchester United in the summer for a British record transfer fee of £59.7m and made a fine start to his career in England too before picking up a hamstring injury a few weeks ago.

Though Messi has been named on the three-man shortlist to win the Ballon d'Or, it is the first time the Barcelona forward has failed to win the Argentine award since 2006.

Di Maria has earned 56 caps for Argentina and has struck the back of the net eleven times for his country.
