New Leeds United assistant manager Steve Thompson has outlined his football philosophy and what he expects to see on the pitch from the players.

Thompson joined the Whites as Neil Redfearn's number two earlier today from Huddersfield Town. He penned a contract until the end of the season with the option for a further year.

The assistant knows Redfearn well, the pair having both made their debut at Bolton Wanderers, forming a close friendship; Thompson was the best man at Redfearn's wedding.

Now he is focusing on the task at hand and helping Redfearn guide Leeds forward. And Thompson is clear about what he likes to see.

"First and foremost I think the players have got to go and affect the game. They've got to play with an enjoyment and no fear", he explained to LUTV.

"Do what they're good at. I don't like seeing these good players getting it coached out of them.

"I'm not saying be a free spirit. We can work on the strengths and the weaknesses, but you want to get a team out there that's got that passion, desire and willingness to work for each other. And make it a happy environment.

"Before they go onto the pitch they must know the expectations of that position and we'll make sure that they do."

Thompson will join Redfearn on the bench when Leeds play Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
