Inter Milan are looking at Newcastle United midfielder Jonas Gutierrez in order to reinforce their team in January, according to Italian outlet Calcio Mercato.

Roberto Mancini's men are in desperate need of reinforcements after having conceded 21 goals in 15 Serie A matches in the league and failing to spark a challenge for a top three Champions League spot.

The name of the Argentine, who can also play as a full-back, has therefore been suggested to Mancini by Inter Milan officials as a potential new year signing.

The 31-year-old has battled testicular cancer and swelling of his lymph nodes over the last year. The situation though has now improved, with the player set to return to action soon.

It is thought the Magpies might ask for a fee in the region of €2m for a deal to be struck.

Since joining Newcastle in 2008, Gutierrez has managed a total of 194 appearances for the Magpies, having scored eleven goals.

He has also earned 22 caps for Argentina after making his debut against France in 2007.
