Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers admits that Alexis Sanchez was a player the Reds identified as a potential signing over the summer, only to lose out on the forward to Arsenal.

Sanchez, who left Barcelona to head to England, opted to join Arsene Wenger's Arsenal ahead of Rodgers' men, despite the fact Liverpool had only missed out on winning the Premier League title by a whisker last term.

The Chile international has been a sensation at the Emirates Stadium, instantly getting to grips with the cut and thrust of the Premier League.

And Rodgers admits Sanchez was wanted at Anfield.

"All I know is that he is a world-class player and he was identified as someone to come in who would be perfect for us", Rodgers told a press conference today.

"We know he'll be a threat this weekend", Rodgers added, ahead of Liverpool's meeting with Arsenal on Sunday.

Rodgers could choose to field Raheem Sterling in a central role against the Gunners and the Liverpool boss feels the forward has been superb this season.

"The kid has been fantastic wherever he's played this season.

"He was outstanding the other night [against Bournemouth]."
