Diego Lopez has revealed that Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti helped him make the decision to join AC Milan this summer.

Lopez was Ancelotti’s first choice goalkeeper in the league last season at Real Madrid, a decision that irked club captain Iker Casillas.

With two top goalkeepers in the squad, Real Madrid went ahead and bought Costa Rica’s World Cup hero Keylor Navas to complicate the situation even further.

And Lopez admits that the arrival of Navas was a signal that the club were looking beyond him, so he had to make a decision on his future.

He revealed that Ancelotti and Real Madrid’s goalkeeping coach spoke highly of Milan, where they both worked previously, and helped him to make his choice.

“The situation in Madrid was not easy to manage”, Lopez told Tuttosport.

“While the situation with me and Iker Casillas was sustainable, when Madrid signed Keylor Navas I realised that my situation was worse.

“I spoke with Ancelotti and the goalkeeping coach, Villiam Vecchi. They helped me make the decision and they spoke highly of Milan and the club’s history.”

Lopez struggled with injuries early in the season, but has become a regular in the Milan side, while Navas has made only two league starts at Real Madrid.
