Diego Godin wants to remain with Atletico Madrid for many years to come before then heading back to his homeland of Uruguay to finish his career.

The centre-back has been strongly linked with Manchester United, however Atletico Madrid are determined to keep him at the Vicente Calderon.

And Godin is not looking to move. Indeed, the message from the Uruguay international is the opposite, the defender being quoted as saying by Bold: "We shall see [about the future].

"It's hard to know where I will be at the future, but I want to stay at Atletico for many years.

"Right now I feel that I am having the best time in my career and retirement seems a long way away", he added.

But when the time does come to wind down his career, Godin is in little doubt about in which league he wants that to happen, with the comforts of home presenting an appeal which is impossible to resist.

"It is true that I am tempted to return to my homeland and I want to go back there are some point to show my gratitude for all that people have given me throughout my career."

Godin linked up with Atletico Madrid in 2010.
