Liverpool legend Jan Molby believes it is essential Raheem Sterling's finishing improves if manager Brendan Rodgers wants to convert him to a central striker.

Rodgers, who brought in Rickie Lambert and Mario Balotelli as striking options during a £100m spending spree in the summer, has fielded Sterling in attack in Liverpool's last two games.

He missed a number of chances in Liverpool's 3-0 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday, but bounced back with a brace against Bournemouth in the League Cup on Wednesday.

Molby feels that Sterling can add something unique as a striker, but stressed he must score goals.

"You need goals from a centre forward. There's no use converting someone to a centre forward if they're not getting you goals", he told LFC TV.

"It wouldn't be the first time Raheem has played as a striker. As a youth team player that's where he played.

"But I can fully understand in the modern game and how it's played that Raheem could become a central striker.

"You would instantly think he lacks the physicality to play as a lone striker, but he has the movement and the quick feet.

"I think it's so important when you play up front that you can do things on your own. I think if you compare him to the other strikers we have, they are much more reliant on teamwork. Raheem though can create chances on his own."
