Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero believes that Mario Balotelli would flourish at his club, away from the intense media spotlight.

The Serie A outfit have been linked with making a move to sign Balotelli, who has struggled at Liverpool since signing from AC Milan for £16m in the summer.

He is still awaiting his first Premier League goal for his new club and has just been slapped with a one-match ban for posting an offensive image on social media.

Ferrero believes the media are working overtime to ruin Balotelli's career and stated his belief that the hitman would do better at a smaller club such as Sampdoria.

"Balotelli has been massacred by the media. He does not have anyone to protect him", the Sampdoria chief told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"If he ate humble pie and was at a smaller team, such as Samp, he would return to playing calmly."

Balotelli has been linked with leaving Liverpool in January, but it remains to be seen whether the Reds will offload him after just six months.
