Arsene Wenger is expecting a difficult tie in the Champions League last 16 when his Arsenal side meet Monaco.

Arsenal have been drawn to meet one of Wenger's former clubs in the first knockout round and the Frenchman knows the balls could have fallen more unfortunately after his side only finished as runners-up in their group.

He is reasonably happy with taking on Monaco, but has still urged caution, while the tie will be tough in his view.

"I think out of Real Madrid and Monaco, it is better to play Monaco", he told RMC.

"Out of Arsenal and Real, they would prefer Arsenal.

"It will be an open game, we will both have our chances. The disadvantage is that we will play the second game in Monaco, but it will be open between the two teams.

"I saw them play in Lyon and they are very hard to play against", Wenger added.
