Jose Mourinho admits that he was gripped by emotion when he discovered that Arsenal legend Thierry Henry had retired earlier this week.

Henry chose to hang up his boots following the ending of his contract with MLS side New York Red Bulls. He has since agreed to become a pundit for Sky Sports.

Mourinho, who has mostly positive memories of Henry, is disappointed he is bowing out. However, the Chelsea manager is happy Henry himself is happy with his future.

"I am always sad when the big players stop their career, but at the same time when I read his words about a wonderful journey and the way he enjoyed his career, I'm happy.

"I think he's a very happy guy and he's very proud of everything he did.

"He looks forward to the new steps in his life, always connected with football for sure."

But Mourinho reflected on one particular goal Henry scored which he did not enjoy.

"So, I just want to thank him for the great moments he gave to all of us.

"Only one moment I didn't enjoy – when he scored a goal against us when [referee] Mr [Graham] Poll allowed him to take the free kick when everybody was preparing for the free kick.

"But even in that moment he showed how intelligent he was playing football."
