Danny Welbeck could command a spot in the current Manchester United side, former Blackburn Rovers striker Jason Roberts believes.

Manchester United sold Welbeck to Arsenal for £16m in the summer and the England international has taken to life at the Emirates Stadium like a duck to water.

Welbeck has been used in his preferred central striker spot and so far has six goals in all competitions for the Gunners.

And Roberts feels that the 24-year-old, were he still at Old Trafford, would be worthy of a spot in the side.

"There is no doubt that when you're a young player coming through you are looked at differently to when a club pays a lot of money for you", Roberts told the BBC.

"I think that even now Danny Welbeck could be in the Manchester United side, but they always looked at him as the player who had come through."

Roberts also feels the move has been a welcome one for Welbeck, even though he faces competition from Olivier Giroud.

"I think the move has been excellent for him as a man. Even though Olivier Giroud is coming back, he has gone there and puffed out his chest."
