Gus Poyet believes the first goal scored in tomorrow's derby between his Sunderland side and Newcastle United could prove crucial to the outcome of the match.

Sunderland have won the last three fixtures between the two sides, bagging two 3-0 wins and one 2-1 victory.

The Black Cats have also not lost at St. James' Park since 2010 and Poyet is confident heading into the fixture at the home of their fierce rivals.

"Scoring the first goal is always key because if you get the first goal the other team then has to think about coming back, having to show urgency that will give you opportunities and space", he told his club's site.

"The longer the game stays 0-0 the more tense it will become and it’ll get more difficult, so I think it comes down to experience with players knowing how to approach the game and how to deliver", the Uruguayan added.

Newcastle have conceded eight goals in their last two games, although their last home match resulted in a 2-1 win over Premier League leaders Chelsea.
