Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has revealed that skipper Wayne Rooney's role on the pitch will depend on the overall balance of the team.

The 29-year-old played in midfield in the match against Liverpool last weekend, rather than his usual position up front.

The former Bayern Munich manager is happy with his skipper's multifunctional abilities, but insists that he will only use Rooney in midfield when he finds it necessary.

"It is dependable on how the balance in the team is", Van Gaal told his club's official site.

"I need balance in the team. We have won six times in a row and that is because of the balance, I think.

"I don’t know if I shall use him always because it is also dependable on the form of the strikers, because he is a very good striker.

"I can use him in different positions and I like that because I like multi-functional players.

"I normally buy more multi-functional players than specialist."

Manchester United's long injury list has forced Van Gaal to play a lot of players, such as Antonio Valencia and Michael Carrick, out of their preferred positions this season.
