Arsene Wenger admits he felt Liverpool selling Luis Suarez to Barcelona might put them ahead of Arsenal in the race for Alexis Sanchez.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers wanted to sign Sanchez as a replacement for Suarez, who the Reds agreed to sell to Barcelona.

Wenger also wanted Sanchez though and, having done the groundwork by heading to Brazil at the World Cup to woo the Chile international, got his man.

But Wenger admits he felt Liverpool selling Suarez to Barcelona might put them in pole position for Sanchez.

"I thought Liverpool was a serious candidate because they had Suarez going there", Wenger was quoted as saying by ITV.

"So you could think that's an easy way to do the deal but at the end of the day, the player has always the decision."

Wenger also revealed that several other sides were actively looking at Sanchez as a summer signing.

"There were some other clubs that were in for him as well. The fact that today the transfers at that level take always time to get every detail right, so because it takes time, you think always that somebody else can come in. Paris St Germain … I don't know, Bayern [Munich] … to do the deal as well."
