Aston Villa have appealed against striker Gabby Agbonlahor's red card during the match against Manchester United on Saturday.

The 28-year-old was shown a straight red by referee Lee Mason after a challenge on Ashley Young, which Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert thought was not in any way deserving of a red.

"There was nothing, you may as well pack up if you're going to take tackling out of the game", Lambert was quoted as saying by ITV.

"The two have gone in without any malice or studs showing, that's not a red card.

"The two have gone in fairly but the lad [Young] himself admitted he thought he fouled Gabby.

"From where I was standing it's not a red card."

Lambert's team though did a good job, in spite of the sending off, holding Manchester United to a 1-1 draw at Villa Park.

The Claret and Blues are likely to receive the outcome of their appeal by tomorrow, two days prior to their Boxing Day fixture against Swansea.
