Sunderland midfielder Liam Bridcutt has expressed his satisfaction after his team gained all three points from his second successive Tyne-Wear derby played at St. James’s Park yesterday.

The 25-year-old, who signed from Brighton in January this year, made his Sunderland debut against their fierce derby rivals Newcastle United in a match that finished 3-0 in favour of the Black Cats back in February.

A 90th-minute strike by Adam Johnson meant Bridcutt continued his winning run against Newcastle, which has continued since his Brighton days.

Talking about his record against the Magpies, the Scotland international told the club site: “I’ve only played in two north east derbies and we’ve won them both – the first was my first game for Sunderland too.

“I’ve also never ever lost against Newcastle – two wins with Brighton and two wins with Sunderland – I’m happy with that record”, he further added.

Bridcutt played the last 20 minutes of the match when he came on for Lee Cattermole. Emphasising the importance of three points, he said: “The three points are massive for us.

“It didn’t matter who we were playing today we needed those points on the board and to get a win under our belts, however, it’s just a huge bonus that the win came in the derby!” he concluded.

Sunderland will look to carry on their winning run when they take on 19th placed Hull City on Boxing Day.
