Liverpool are ready to step up their interest in Genoa’s young Italian custodian Mattia Perin as they look to solve their goalkeeping conundrum.

Regarded as the long term successor to Gianluigi Buffon in the Italian national team, the 21-year-old has turned heads this season with his performances in Serie A.

Liverpool’s interest in the goalkeeper was made public by his agent earlier this month and he also mentioned that his client would prefer to make a move away from Italy.

The Reds have been tracking the shot-stopper from some time, but since their interest has become public knowledge, they are keen get a move on with the transfer.

The English giants are ready to contact Genoa and ask the club to name their price for the highly regarded Italian goalkeeper, according to Sky Italia.

Simon Mignolet’s declining form and Brad Jones’ uncertain goalkeeping have forced the Reds to dip into the market for a goalkeeper and they regard Perin as their long-term solution to the problem.

But Genoa are not ready to sell their goalkeeper without a fight and are set to ask for around £10m for Perin.

His agent has said that a summer move is a more feasible option for his client, but it remains to be seen whether Liverpool are ready to wait.
