Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny believes Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin’s rise from non-league football to the top division is inspiring.

Austin has scored 11 goals in his inaugural season in the Premier League. His tally puts him third on the list of top goalscorers behind Sergio Aguero and Diego Costa.

Talking about the striker, against whom he played in the Championship while away on loan from Arsenal, Szczesny told the club site: “He’s been brilliant.

“He was a good player back then but to see someone coming through the lower leagues, into the Premier League and then doing as well as he is at the moment is very good”, he further added.

The Polish international expressed his happiness about Austin’s success, he said: “He could be a role model to young English players coming through.

“I’m delighted to see him doing well but I’m just hoping that his goalscoring form won’t be as good on Friday”.

Looking ahead to facing the Hoops at the Emirates Stadium on Boxing Day, the 25-year-old added: “It is just about the three points, but it’s important to collect those at Christmas.”

Arsenal will look to win all three points against the fellow Londoners in their quest to stay on course for a top four finish.
