Former Chelsea manager Tommy Docherty has backed his former employers to win the Premier League ahead of defending champions Manchester City.

After Manchester City’s faltering start, Chelsea had built up a sizeable eight-point lead at top of the league table, but their subsequent setbacks against Sunderland and Newcastle United has seen the lead whittled down to three points.

Docherty, who was at the helm of the Blues from 1961 to 1967, has called the current season a two-horse race.

"It'll be them or Man City. I think it'll be Chelsea, I'll be amazed if the champions don't come from Chelsea and Man City. It's a two-horse race”, he was quoted as saying by Sportal.

He predicted a close race between the two sides currently occupying the top two spots in the league table.

"City at full strength and Chelsea at full strength…it could be a point in the championship.

"They [Chelsea] won't run away with it. I wouldn't be surprised if they won it, and I'd love Chelsea to win it actually, but they won't run away with it, it'll go right to the wire."
