Liverpool and Manchester City are both chasing Sampdoria goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

The Argentina shot-stopper helped his country reach the World Cup final in the summer and was heavily linked with leaving Sampdoria in August, Liverpool and Manchester United mooted as suitors.

He stayed put though and following an injury to club number 1 Emiliano Viviano was handed a run between the sticks.

Romero has held onto his spot despite Viviano regaining fitness, but Sampdoria are thought to be willing to listen to offers when the transfer window swings open in around a week's time.

According to local daily Il Corriere Mercantile, both Liverpool and Manchester City are showing interest in Romero.

Liverpool are believed to have the edge however, given they are looking at the Argentine as a potential number 1 following the dropping of Simon Mignolet.

At Manchester City, Romero would be behind Joe Hart in the pecking order.
