Vurnon Anita has hinted that he could quit Newcastle United, despite having been selected for the Magpies' Boxing Day defeat at Manchester United.

The former Ajax man completed all 90 minutes at Old Trafford as his side slipped to a 3-1 defeat to Louis van Gaal's men in the festive Premier League clash.

However, given the Dutchman had not featured in Newcastle's previous eight games, he is not willing to rule anything out with the January transfer window set to open.

"As a footballer you always want to play. When I heard I would start I was very happy", Anita was quoted as saying by Dutch outlet Soccer News.

"I work hard and if the coach needs me I'll be there – but I want to play more.

"Who knows [what will happen in January].

"You never know in football what will happen.

"Maybe something will happen, we'll see."

Anita, who has won three senior caps for the Netherlands, has made seven Premier League appearances for the Magpies this term. The 25-year-old linked up with Newcastle in 2012, joining from Ajax.
