Danny Welbeck has emphasised the importance of Arsenal beating West Ham today, something which has boosted the Gunners' top four challenge.

Goals from Santi Cazorla (penalty) and Welbeck himself put Sam Allarydce's men to the sword 2-1 at Upton Park, pushing Arsenal up to fifth in the Premier League, level on points with fourth-placed Southampton; West Ham have dropped to sixth.

For Welbeck, the win was simply essential for Arsenal as it boosted their bid to climb up to the upper reaches of the table.

"It’s vitally important. To go into this Christmas period, we want to be gaining points and put the pressure on the teams around us, so it was great that we got the three points today", he said via his club's site.

And the striker added: "It was definitely important to get the win today. It puts us back in amongst it and we need to be further up the table. It was a tough game today as you could tell from the end of the game."

Next up for Arsenal is Southampton, a game which presents them with a golden opportunity to start 2015 by claiming fourth spot, something not lost on Welbeck.

"They gave us a difficult test at home and we know how well they’ve been doing this season, so we have to prepare physically, mentally and tactically right for this game.

"Going into the new year, we want to start it off well."
