Arsenal have a need for new players in the January transfer window, boss Arsene Wenger admits, while noting he will only pull the deal trigger for the right target.

Wenger sold centre-back Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona in the summer, but failed to replace the Belgian, something which has led to full-backs Nacho Monreal and Mathieu Debuchy being forced into central areas at points this term.

Wenger could also lose players next month too, with Lukas Podolski looking to exit the club.

And he is aware that he needs to add to his squad, even if he is reluctant to simply buy to make up the numbers.

"There is a need there [to buy], but the right opportunity has to come up", Wenger told a press conference this morning.

"To buy [just for the sake] to buy is not what we want to do, but if the right opportunity comes up, we will do it.

"If you look at the number of games some players played and the injuries we have with [Jack] Wilshere, [Aaron] Ramsey and [Mikel] Arteta, we're a bit short at the moment in midfield."

Arsenal have been linked with a number of players, not least Aston Villa's centre-back Ron Vlaar.

The Dutchman has an expiring contract at Villa Park and impressed at the World Cup with the Netherlands.
