Ronald Koeman says the ball is in Toby Alderweireld's court over a permanent move to Southampton.

The Belgian centre-back joined the Saints on loan from Spanish champions Atletico Madrid in the summer and Koeman has been impressed enough to want to keep him on a permanent basis.

Koeman told Belgian daily Het Nieuwsblad: "The situation is very clear.

"I've spoken with Toby and I told him that I want him to stay at Southampton permanently", the Dutchman continued.

"Now the ball is in his court.

"He has time to think about it."

Alderweireld clocked up all 90 minutes for Southampton's 2-0 win over Arsenal yesterday, which strengthened their grip on a top four spot.
