Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo has come to the defence of under fire team-mate Gareth Bale, who was booed by club supporters during their match against Espanyol on Sunday.

The Welshman scored with a spectacular free kick in the 28th minute of the match which finished 3-0 in Real Madrid’s favour. The goal was Bale’s eighth and he has assisted a further three in his 14 La Liga appearances this season.

But the 25-year-old received criticism from the Real Madrid faithful after he failed to lay off the ball to team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo for an easy tap-in and instead went for the goal himself. The Portuguese was visibly angry with Bale’s decision.

Ronaldo has termed Bale a key player for their team and added their Espanyol match is in the past now and fans should get behind the forward.

"I think the things with Gaz are normal because the fans know that Gaz is a very important player for us, a key player”, he was quoted by the BBC as saying.

"What happened on Saturday is in the past, sometimes I make mistakes too so it's part of the business, part of football. I think the people will be nice with him and they should be nice with him."

Bale will look to put the criticism behind him when Real Madrid take on Getafe in the league on Sunday.
