Former Liverpool defender Daniel Agger says he has hugely benefited from a winter break this year, of the type he did not receive when he played in England at Anfield.

Liverpool sold Agger to Brondby last summer for £3m, bringing to an end the centre-back's long association with the Merseyside giants.

He saw injury interrupt his initial time back at his first club in football, but clocked up a consistent run of games before the Danish league broke for a winter break.

Brondby are not now back in action until the end of February and Agger is enjoying the time off.

"I've needed it", he told Ekstra Bladet.

"It is essential for a footballer to get a good start, otherwise it affects him all season.

"I did not get one in the summer and therefore it is good to be here in Denmark to get this break", Agger added.
