Liverpool and Arsenal linked Benfica defender Maxi Pereira might eventually stay at the Estadio da Luz after Besiktas revealed that the Portuguese giants have refused to sell the player.

Both Arsenal and Liverpool have been linked with looking to sign defenders in the winter transfer window and both have been heavily linked with a move for the Benfica man.

The Uruguayan is also coveted by Besiktas and the Turkish giants did try to negotiate a deal with Benfica to sign the 30-year-old defender.

But Besiktas revealed that Benfica are not ready to part with the defender in the middle of the season.

“The club have informed us that they will not release the player”, Ahmet Nur Cebi, the vice-president of Besiktas, was quoted as saying by Calcio Mercato.

With Benfica refusing to sell the defender, Liverpool and Arsenal will have to remove the Uruguayan international’s name from their shortlist of January transfer targets.
