Sunderland are hopeful of bringing former Tottenham Hotspur forward Jermain Defoe to the Stadium of Light this month.

The Black Cats have only scored 18 goals in the league this season and are desperate to sign a proven goalscorer in the winter transfer window.

They have zeroed in on the former Tottenham man and believe that he can add much-needed goals to a side who are desperately trying to stay away from the relegation zone.

According to the Press Association, the two parties have been locked in negotiations over the last few days and Sunderland are confident that Defoe will wear their colours in the second half of their campaign.
