Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe is having a medical with Sunderland, according to the Press Association.

Defoe is looking to cement a return to English football after growing unhappy at MLS side Toronto FC.

He has been training with former club Spurs in a bid to keep fit during the MLS off-season and has been linked with a number of clubs.

QPR boss Harry Redknapp is keen, while Hull City have also been mooted as a potential destination.

But Defoe appears to be on his way to Sunderland to help the Black Cats attempt to steer clear of the drop zone.

Boss Gus Poyet is keen to secure Defoe and will bank on his prolific goalscoring to help his side.
