Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre admits that the club have held discussions about Steven Gerrard returning on loan from Los Angeles Galaxy at some point in the future.

Gerrard is departing Liverpool for the United States when his current contract at Anfield runs its course at the end of the season.

It has been suggested he could return to the Premier League for loan stints when the MLS have their off-season, as Thierry Henry notably did with a spell at Arsenal.

And Ayre admits such an option is indeed on the table, which could see Gerrard continue to add to his Liverpool appearance tally even when he is on the books at Los Angeles Galaxy.

Speaking on Liverpool-based radio station CityTalk, Ayre said: "I've said openly to Steven and his representatives, as have [manager] Brendan [Rodgers] and the owners, that we see Steven as part of the family.

"The fact that he's leaving at the end of the season doesn't mean it's the last we'll see of him at Liverpool.

"What that means, the details aren't known yet, but we will keep a regular dialogue with him and I hope we will see him here again in the long term", Ayre continued.

"It's conceivable [that he could return to Liverpool on loan]. It happens a lot in MLS, and it's something we talked to Steven and his representatives about."
