Sunderland have completed the signing of England striker Jermain Defoe from MLS side Toronto FC.

The former Tottenham Hotspur man has penned a three-and-a-half year deal with the Black Cats and is returning to English football after spending eleven months in the MLS.

The 32-year-old has been training with Tottenham since last week and was looking for a way back into the Premier League.

He has scored 125 Premier League goals for three different clubs and Black Cats manager Gus Poyet is hoping that Defoe will add much needed sharpness to their lacklustre attack for the second half of their campaign.

“I am thrilled that Jermain is a Sunderland player”, Poyet told the club’s official site.

"I know all about his attributes and his qualities first-hand and his exceptional goalscoring record speaks for itself. He has something different, something special.”

Defoe is looking forward to another stint in the Premier League and expressed his excitement at signing for a ‘great club’ such as Sunderland.

“I am delighted to be here and I’m looking forward to the challenge.

“It is a great club and I’ve always enjoyed coming up here and playing against Sunderland because of the stadium and the supporters.”

Jozy Altidore is moving back to the MLS, where he started his career, by joining Toronto FC as part of the deal.
