Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta is pleased with their 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Spanish Cup tie yesterday.

The Catalan giants hosted reigning La Liga champions Atletico Madrid at the Camp Nou last night in the first leg of their quarter-final tie and won with a solitary Lionel Messi goal in the 85th minute of the match.

Barcelona struggled to find a way through an organised and combative Atletico Madrid defence, but a penalty conceded by Juanfran due to foul on Sergio Busquets gave the Catalans a chance to take the lead. Messi’s spot kick was saved by Jan Oblak, but the goalkeeper couldn’t keep the rebound out as the Argentine bundled it home.

Iniesta dubbed it a good result ahead of the return leg due to be played next week.

“It’s a good result, but we’ve got the return leg to go. It will be 90 intense minutes. We’ve put in a great shift against a team that’s really difficult to overcome”, Iniesta told Canal Plus.

“We need to keep going like this. We’re happy about the 1-0. Keeping a clean sheet is good, but it doesn’t guarantee anything. We’ll try and do things right in the return leg.”

The Spain international added that Barcelona’s superiority in certain areas of the pitch helped them get past stubborn Atletico Madrid resistance.

"It’s tough to play Atletico, because they give you few chances, but I think we had a good game and we were superior in the crucial areas."

Barcelona will look to make their goal advantage count when they play Atletico Madrid in the second leg of their Spanish Cup quarter-final tie on Wednesday.
