Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger feels that Brazilian defender Gabriel Paulista, the club's newest signing, has a chance of making the grade in English football.

Wenger's men have agreed a deal with Villarreal to snap up Paulista, with forward Joel Campbell making the opposite journey on a loan switch.

Wenger, who has been searching for a new centre-back since selling Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona last summer, believes that Paulista fits the bill and gives the Brazilian a good chance of making the grade in the Premier League.

"He is a defender, can play on the flanks as well, tall, pacy and strong in the challenges", the Arsenal manager told the BBC, before revealing the deal could be official before tomorrow evening.

"He has a good chance to adapt to English football.

"I see in him good potential and he can be a good addition to the squad. It could be done before the [FA Cup] draw tomorrow."

Wenger's side booked their spot in the next round of the FA Cup earlier this evening when they came through a testing tie against Championship outfit Brighton 3-2 at the Amex Stadium.

Paulista will be expected to battle with Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker for a first choice spot in the heart of the Arsenal defence.
