Former Liverpool midfielder Terry McDermott has tipped Brazilian starlet Philippe Coutinho to become a world-class player in the future.

Coutinho, who arrived at Liverpool in January 2013 from Italian outfit Inter Milan, has become an important fixture of manager Brendan Rodgers’ side at Anfield.

The Brazil international has scored two goals and assisted the same number in the league thus far this term, and his sparkling performances in December saw him win Liverpool’s Player of the Month trophy.

McDermott, who played eight seasons for Liverpool during their heydays in the 1970s and early 1980s, believes Coutinho has a very extensive array of talents which enable him to perform at a very high level.

"He's got everything. He's got an engine, he's quick and he goes past people. He can only get better and I think he will get better”, he told Anfield 360 – Added Time.

The former midfielder, who won three European Cups and five league titles during his own spell at Liverpool, added that Coutinho has age on his side and he has the right ingredients to become a world-class player in the coming years.

"He is only 22 and he will get better. If he does, you've got a real player on your hands. He is going to be an outstanding player for many years for Liverpool."

Liverpool will hope Coutinho displays the full array of his skills when they play Chelsea in the second leg of their League Cup semi-final tie at Stamford Bridge tomorrow. The first leg ended 1-1.
