Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis has lavished praise on Leeds United forward Nicky Ajose, who is on loan at the Railwaymen.

Ajose came up trumps for the Alex on Saturday when Crewe beat local rivals Port Vale 1-0 at Vale Park through a goal from the Leeds man in the 39th minute.

The forward missed a penalty earlier in the derby clash after being brought down in the box, but did not let it damage his confidence and fired home after latching onto a well-placed pass from Jamie Ness.

Port Vale had no answer and slipped to defeat, leaving Davis, whose side are now out of the relegation zone in League One, gushing over the Leeds hitman.

"That is the quality Nicky has. A lot of players would have reflected on the penalty miss, but he didn’t. He kept getting in there and looking for chances", Davis explained to his club's site.

"That is the quality he has and he has popped up just a few minutes after his miss to score the winning goal. It was a great pass from Jamie.

"I think the Vale defenders through he was lining up to shoot, but he has cleverly slipped Nicky in behind and he was poked it past the keeper."

Ajose had his loan at Crewe extended to cover the rest of the season earlier this month and his long term future at Leeds remains unclear.

The Elland Road outfit snapped up Ajose from Peterborough United last summer, but his chances receded following the departure of David Hockaday as head coach.
