Jesse Lingard has stressed Manchester United Under-21s had to work hard to break down a resilient Liverpool team last night.

Goals from Nick Powell and Paddy McNair helped the Red Devils to register a 2-1 win over Liverpool in a game where Victor Valdes wore the Manchester United colours for the first time since he joined the club earlier this month.

Lingard recently returned from a knee operation and was on the bench in Manchester United’s FA Cup third round game against Yeovil Town earlier this month.

He did play against Norwich Under-21s earlier this month, but admits that a win against Liverpool in his first full 90 minutes is just what the doctor ordered.

"It's obviously amazing to be back", Lingard told MUTV.

"It's been good and to get the three points is the cherry on the top really because it was against Liverpool.”

Lingard insisted that last night’s win was even more special as they had to work hard to break down a resilient Liverpool team at Leigh Sports Village.

"I like getting on the ball and making things happen.

"It was hard in the first half due to Liverpool's two sitting midfielders but we broke them down in the second half with our game plan.”
