Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho has revealed that the recent improvement in their defensive displays is having a positive impact on their attacking game as well.

Coutinho has been one of Liverpool’s standout performers this season, having scored two goals and assisted a further three in all competitions in the current campaign.

Brendan Rodgers’ men have gone unbeaten in their last ten matches in all competitions, which includes their 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Anfield in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final last week.

Improvements in their defensive displays have seen Liverpool concede only five goals in their last six Premier League fixtures as they look to climb up the table and challenge for a top four place.

The Brazilian believes solidity at the back has allowed their attacking game to flourish.

“The team has been playing very well lately and knowing that the defence has been solid gives us more confidence up front to try new moves and create more goalscoring opportunities”, Coutinho told the club site.

"Without the ball, we've been pressing the opposition more like the manager has always prompted us to do – we probably missed out on that at the start of the season.

"Then when the ball is under our possession, things certainly become easier when we are more confident in ourselves”, he explained.

Liverpool travel to Stamford Bridge this evening to take on Chelsea in the second leg of their League Cup semi-final as they look to book a spot at Wembley.
