Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina believes defending is a collective effort and their defenders have done a commendable job in making his job easier in his inaugural season in the Premier League.

Ospina arrived at the Emirates Stadium on the back of his stellar performances for Colombia during their remarkable run to the quarter-final in the World Cup last summer.

The Colombian has started the last two league matches for the Gunners after Wojciech Szczesny was benched following his erratic displays.

The 26-year-old has grabbed the first team opportunity with both hands as he is kept a clean sheet in both his league starts, which included a remarkable display in their 2-0 win against the defending Premier League champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

However, Ospina has acknowledged the performances of centre-backs Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny in making his job easy.

“They’ve helped a lot, they’re great players and great people. That has really helped me”, Ospina told Arsenal Player.

Making his ambitions clear, he added that he hopes to continue performing at the same level to maintain his first team status.

“They’re very experienced players. We hope to keep winning, keep learning every day and keep making the most of the opportunities we get.

“[As a goalkeeper] you try to help the team by giving them confidence from the back and keeping a clean sheet.

“Having said that, not conceding is a group effort, and I think the team did extremely well in that regard against City.

“From the defenders right through to the strikers, we all worked hard to win the ball back, and that was very important in terms of getting the result”, he concluded.

Ospina will look to keep his clean sheet streak going when Arsenal host Aston Villa in their next league fixture on Sunday.
