Manchester United youngster Jesse Lingard believes that amid the fierce competition for a place in Louis van Gaal’s first team, he has it in him to break into the starting eleven.

Lingard, who recently recovered from a knee injury, was influential in Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Liverpool in an Under-21 Premier League match on Monday.

The youngster started Van Gaal’s first competitive match in charge of the Red Devils, when he featured as a right sided wing-back in their opening day 2-1 loss to Swansea City in the Premier League.

Lingard started as an attacking midfielder in Monday’s win and proclaimed the position to be his preferred one.

"I like getting on the ball and making things happen”, Lingard told MUTV.

“It was hard in the first half due to Liverpool's two sitting midfielders but we broke them down in the second half with our game plan”, he reflected.

However, the youngster acknowledges that it will be difficult to break into the first team as an attacking midfielder considering the wealth of talent at Van Gaal’s disposal. Nevertheless, he has promised 100 per cent commitment, day in, day out, to prove himself.

"Obviously, Juan [Mata] plays there and Wazza [Wayne Rooney] can play there as well.

"But I'll keep doing in training what I do, day in and day out, and back my ability.”
