Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha believes that manager Louis van Gaal needs more time to get the team back among the contenders to win the Premier League title.

Saha played for four years at Manchester United under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson from 2004 until his departure to Everton in 2008.

The Red Devils failed to qualify for the Champions League under David Moyes following Ferguson's retirement from management at the end of the 2012/13 season, and the club’s struggles to have continued under Van Gaal.

Manchester United currently sit fourth in the Premier League, 12 points shy of the leaders Chelsea, as they bid to finish among the top four.

Talking to MUTV, Saha said that the primary challenge for the club is to reclaim their place among the Premier League elite.

“The main thing is to be up there challenging again. In some ways last year we lost momentum.”

However, he acknowledges that the club have improved under the Dutchman’s management compared to their travails under Moyes last season.

“This year is definitely better, more with a solid base than before. It is all about transition.”

Saha further added that Van Gaal deserves more time at the helm to get the team performing at their full potential and understand the ins and outs of life at Old Trafford

“This transition is going on now and it will take time for the manager to understand fully about the club because it is a special one.

“I'm sure that any manager who comes in would struggle [at first].”
