FC Basel defender Taulant Xhaka has lavished praise on Liverpool fans and the experience of playing at Anfield.

Xhaka was part of the Basel team that eliminated Liverpool from the Champions League at the group stage earlier this season, beating Brendan Rodgers' team 1-0 in Switzerland and then holding them to a 1-1 draw at Anfield.

For the Albania international Basel's final group stage fixture, away at Anfield, was special.

He explained in a UEFA Q&A: "Liverpool have such great fans.

"Anfield is just amazing; the atmosphere, the ambiance, 'Never Walk Alone' before kick-off; these are special moments.

"Whether they're winning or losing, the fans are always behind their team."

Xhaka also thoroughly enjoyed the experience of turning out against legendary Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard.

He said: "Playing against Steven Gerrard was just great."

A product of Basel's youth system, Taulant is the brother of Granit Xhaka, who plays for Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach.

Taulant represented Switzerland at Under-17 level through to Under-21 level before opting to play his senior international football for Albania.

He has enjoyed significant success with Basel at club level, picking up two Swiss Super League titles, while on a loan spell at Grasshopper he won the Swiss Cup.

It remains to be seen whether Taulant will receive the opportunity to play at Anfield again in the future.
