Morgan Schneiderlin has been promised that he can leave Southampton in the summer if an acceptable offer arrives, according to French sports daily L'Equipe.

The France international midfielder wanted to leave St. Mary's last summer, amid interest from both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

However, following the Saints losing a number of key players, his departure was blocked and he stayed put, although was publicly annoyed with being denied a move.

But Schneiderlin has been given a verbal assurance by the powers that be that if an acceptable bid lands this coming summer, his departure from St. Mary's will be authorised.

The former Strasbourg man has only burnished his credentials in the current campaign, helping Southampton confound their doubters to sit third in the Premier League at present.

Arsenal may rekindle their interest in Schneiderlin in the summer, while Tottenham could once again be keen.

The Frenchman has been open about his desire to play in the Champions League however, which may hand Arsene Wenger's men an advantage.
