Ahead of their clash against Rangers, Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon has said that in Old Firm games, league standings never matter as the matches are always fiercely competitive.

Ronny Deila’s side are set to take on Kenny McDowall’s Rangers in the semi-final of the Scottish League Cup at Hampden Park on Sunday.

The reigning Scottish Premiership champions have won their last four league matches to take top spot in the table with 51 points, three ahead of their nearest rivals Aberdeen, with a game in hand.

Championship side Rangers have lost two of their last five league matches as they sit second in the table with 41 points, 13 behind Hearts as they bid to return to the top division after an absence of three years.

However, Gordon believes league standings do not play a role when Celtic and Rangers go head-to-head.

“A Celtic against Rangers game, nothing else matters other than the result”, he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

The goalkeeper further added that neither team will shy away from putting in their best effort as they look seal their passage to the final.

“Both sets of players will be going out there and putting 100% effort in for their clubs and trying to get a result.

“What league form the team is in doesn't matter at all – it's just down to this one game. It is 11 against 11 and anything can happen.

“Both sets of players are well used to big games and how to deal with that.”
