Manchester United have been dealt an injury blow with the news that Michael Carrick is ruled out for four weeks with a muscle rupture.

Carrick had been a regular feature in Manchester United’s midfield since his return from an ankle injury in early November. He has made 13 appearances in the current league campaign, in which he has provided a solitary assist.

The current injury setback will see the Englishman miss tomorrow’s Premier League encounter against Leicester City. Carrick is also looking at missing meetings with against Cambridge United (FA Cup), West Ham United, Burnley, Swansea City and Sunderland.

Talking to MUTV, manager Louis van Gaal, announced the injury to the 33-year-old midfielder.

“Michael Carrick has been injured now so he is out at the weekend. He can be important for the team but he is now injured.

"I think it shall take more than four weeks, so it is not a minor injury but a muscle rupture, I think.

"He is also the second captain but I have to say that’s part of the job of a manager, especially this season at Manchester United, because we have suffered a lot of injuries. But now we have seen [the light at] the end of the tunnel."

The Red Devils currently sit fourth in the league after collecting 40 points from their 22 games thus far as they bid a return to the Champions League after a year’s absence, following a finish of seventh last season.

Van Gaal’s men will look to collect all three points when they face Leicester City tomorrow to stay on course to achieve their objective. They will have to do so without Carrick however.
