Leeds United have officially confirmed that defender Jason Pearce has been told to Championship rivals Wigan Athletic.

The Whites recently snapped up centre-back Sol Bamba on loan from Palermo and have wasted little time in allowing Pearce to exit Elland Road as a result, with competition for a defensive spot fierce.

Leeds announced in a statement: "The club can now confirm that Jason Pearce has today joined Wigan Athletic for an undisclosed fee."

Pearce linked up with Leeds from Portsmouth in 2012 and wasted little time establishing himself with the Yorkshire giants, cementing a spot in the side.

The defender was handed the club captaincy last summer following the sale of Ross McCormack to Fulham, in a sign of his standing at Elland Road.

However, he found commanding a regular first team spot more difficult in the second half of the campaign and now Leeds have opted to allow him to head to the DW Stadium.

The 27-year-old links up with a side sitting second bottom in the Championship and in the thick of a relegation fight in the shape of Wigan.
