West Ham United midfielder Stewart Downing has hailed the timing of their encounter against Liverpool as they gear up to face the Reds tomorrow.

The Hammers go into the match buoyant after their fourth round FA Cup win over Bristol City, whereas Liverpool lost their League Cup semi-final tie against Chelsea after a fiercely contested second leg that went into extra time, on Tuesday night.

Sam Allardyce's side defeated Brendan Rodgers’ men 3-1 in the reverse fixture played on 20th September and go into the match lying seventh in the Premier League, one place above Liverpool.

Talking to West Ham's official site, Downing appears upbeat about their encounter as they look to inflict another defeat on Rodgers’ side.

“We go to Anfield off a good FA Cup result at Bristol City and we can go up there and win the game, just as we did at home earlier in the season.”

Downing, who was signed by Allardyce from Liverpool in the summer of 2013, has enjoyed a good run of form having scored five goals and assisted a further seven this season so far.

He further added that the match couldn’t have come at a better time for the Hammers as they look to pounce on a tired Liverpool after their energy-sapping 120 minutes at Stamford Bridge.

“Liverpool played their Capital One Cup semi-final second leg in midweek, which went to extra-time, so hopefully we can capitalise on any tiredness and win there for the first time in 50-odd years.

“It would certainly be a nice time to do it because we're a point above them in the table and we can extend that if we get a good result”, he concluded.

A win for West Ham tomorrow will give their ambitions of a top four finish a big boost.
