Wigan Athletic new boy Jason Pearce insists that he is delighted to have been handed the opportunity to sign for the Latics and will do everything he can to get his new team out of the Championship relegation zone.

The 27-year-old, who was with Leeds United previously, has penned a two-and-a-half year deal with Malky Mackay's side.

Pearce believes that it will be a good challenge for him to play for a side that are currently fighting to save their Championship status. And he says he jumped at the chance to sign for the Latics.

“Once Wigan showed an interest, I jumped at the chance”, Pearce, who has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract, told his new club's official site.

“I spoke to my agent, he said Wigan were interested and once they put the offer in then I wanted to get here and sign.

“I think with the position the club is in, it’s a great challenge and hopefully we’ll get out of it and, if we can, we’ll have achieved something special."

Pearce managed 23 appearances for the Peacocks this season, but with the arrival of Sol Bamba from Palermo, Neil Redfearn's side decided to offload him with competition for a defensive spot being fierce.

While reminiscing about his time at Elland Road, the former Portsmouth player said that he had a tough time at the club towards the end when he found commanding a regular spot in the team difficult.

“It’s been ups and downs at Leeds; I started off quite well and played a lot of games and we did OK despite not getting to where we wanted to.

"But towards the end it’s been a little bit difficult and I wanted a fresh start."

Pearce will now aim to make a quick impact for his new team as soon as possible.
